Keep up the good work with the project and I would suggest that you stick with this but ignore things for 30 days and use that as a re-evaluation interval. The shorter the interval here, the more you can be fooled into thinking somehting is happening under the "wishful thinking" clause you already mentioned. Be patient and stick to it.

Once a hair follicle starts growing it will remain active for it's life cycle. Rogaine will cut down drastically on the number of dormant follicles and radically increase the number of active ones in most people.
If you stop using Minoxidil the hair will not immediately "fall out". This is a bunch of garbage started by others in the scalp hair replacement industry to push their own wares over Minoxidil.
Effectiveness would depend on your genetics, patience and your ability to stick to a long term program of usage.
Remember if it is going to work you are not going to see much for the first 90 days. If you see much more than maybe a little fuzz you should consider yourself lucky.
