At 45 I've been bearded since my early 30s. I found this site sometime ago when I was searching for solutions to facial hair problems - I occasionally suffer from temporary bald patches in my beard. Thankfully everythings ok at the moment. The site looks fun so I thought I'd become a member. I've always had a closely trimmed full beard. As you can see from my photo I don't have much hair on top so I tend to keep everything (hair and beard) buzzed down quite short. I must admit I've never been a fan of really long or bushy beards anyway. I've never really experimented though I'm often tempted to try a goatee possibly with a pair of sideburns or chops. I'm beginning to gain a few gyey hairs but not sure whether to try colouring or just leave things to nature! Anyway look forward to joining in with some of the debates and discussions. Good to hear you are already a long time beard wearer. I saw your comment about possibly colouring your beard to cover the emerging grey. My personal view is don't bother.I tried it with mine, and it proved to be time consuming, messy and long term expensive. As time goes by your beard will get more and more grey, so you will need more and more colour. Also, if you keep your beard short anyway, the colour will grow out very quickly and you will need to keep retouching it more often than you expect. I am sure there will be other opinions on this subject, but my view is it isn't worth it as a long term option.

I agree with what you're saying hatebeinsmooth. To be honist I don't think I'll bother colouring. Far too much hastle and I should imagine it's tricky finding the right colour mach. No I think I'll grow old and grey gracefully!!

I know where you're coming from- I just had to buzz my hair due to thinning, and as a result the beard had to get trimmed too. I really liked the thicker beard (not bushy though, I prefer a cleaner look) but we have to deal with whatever life throws at us. Looking forward to some good discussion also! You'll like it here; everyone's great.

I think I can live with it! After all some of you guys have really cool looking grey beards. To be honest I was more concerned when I had the bald patches. They've appeared twice over the years, both times in the same place under my chin on the left side. The first time was about six years ago. It lasted about a month before growing back. It returned again about two years ago and was slightly more worrying because it didn't grow back until after about two or three months. It measured about an inch in diamiter so it did notice. A lady friend of my friend jokingly suggested I fill it in with an eyebrow pencil! I considered shaving down to a goat. That would have been the obvious solution as the effected area would have been shaved. But I stuck with my full beard and it eventually grew back in. I have since read up on possible causes and treatments though I must admit I'm sceptical about creams and lotions which claim to cure any kind of baldness. At some stage I'll give the goatee a go though I feel quite comfortable with my full beard. Cheers guys Rob

Or did it just go bald with no other symptom? Ha ha, eyebrow pencil. That's funny. I think I'd just grow a longer beard and comb it over the bald spots. ha ha ha.

No symtoms at all. When I first noticed it I thought I'd somehow accidentally done it with the beard trimmer. I know the eyebrow pancil made me laugh too! A beard combover sounds funny as well!!

That's funny. Pencils, comb-overs,,,,whatever works. Right? I had a some hair loss on my shins this past year. I couldn't figure it out. I think it is stress related though. Not sure. No rash or itchiness either.

I've only had my beard coming up a year. I started it growing last August. The beard really suits you. The bald patch issue is really strange. I had a quick look on the net and there is a condition called Alopecia Areata (Alopecia Barbae when in the beard) that sounds like your situation. How long do you keep your beard trimmed, by the way? A lot of people have different takes on what's "short". If you asked Moses here, I doubt short would be the same as it would be to say, Gunstar or DAXX.

Cheers mate. Beardedteen - It varies but generally I maintain my beard around 5mm. I have my hair on top buzzed on a #1 every two to three weeks so it's a bit shorter when I have a haircut.
