Outside of African-Americans, they were about as rare as handlebar mustaches are today. A guy had to have a lot of confidence to wear one with all the
"Maynard G. Krebs" comments (google it if those reading don't know who that is).
It seemed about 1991 when some celebrities and sports heros started experimenting with goats, and it became a trend that continues to today despite what some in the fashion media say.
Patience shall be rewarded!

By goatees, just to be clear, I mean circle beards, or the kind of beard which has an unconnected mustache and chin chair only--not the solely chin goatees,
like Krebs had.

Circle beards were also common in the 19th century, although they tended to be alot bigger.
