I made a vow not to shave until I graduate university so I do not want to lose much length but rather simply even up the length a bit. I am very nervous about damaging my beard and also curious as to what tools I require. Would it be better to leave the trimming in the hands of a trusted barber or am I ok to do this myself? Note that I have zero experience in beard upkeep (trimming) since I have never trimmed at all yet. Any tip or advice greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Holding them parallel with your face snip gently over the surface of your beard until you obtain the length and shape you want. Avoid letting the ends of the scissors dig into your beard, otherwise you risk cutting chunks out of it. Going to a barber is an option, but unless he/she has plenty of beard experience and can be made to do exactly what you want you risk disaster. On no account let a barber bring an electric clipper anywhere near your beard; you may find you end up with bristles or stubble. Scissors only and a surface trim should be the rule whether you or a barber does it. Personally I prefer to be responsible for my own mistakes and won't let a barber touch my beard. Keep growing.
