My experience has been that you don't need to be quite as picky when it comes to beard trimmers as you do razors. I've tried every manner of razors, and frankly, they're insanely problematic, every last one of them. Even expensive brands of razors tend to end up giving me razor burn.

On the other hand, beard trimmers are a lot less of an issue. No direct contact with skin! Likely less frequent use. I've essentially found there's three key factors:

1) Guard. Does it stay on reliably and give you the length control you want? How easily could it slip to a shorter-than-desired length? This is a key source of trimming accidents!!

2) Power. Plug in? The cord could easily be the weak spot and fail, so inspect closely. Battery based? You should check the technology; nickel cadmium battery based models are garbage. Nickel metal hydride are better. Lithium ion and lithium polymer cells offer high density but tend to handle fewer cycles of charge than nickel metal hydride. Other technologies exist but are rare on the market.

3) Longevity. Look at the build quality and assess versus your usage profile. Do you need waterproof? If it's cordless, consider the battery life and whether it's replaceable. (Tends to be better to charge less frequently if you have nickel metal hydride cells, to extend their life.) If you have a thick beard, the blade life might also be an issue.

Overall, I've found trimmers pretty easy to select and be satisfied with, I'd encourage you to shop around, and probably just to buy something not too expensive, especially just to get started.
