Why did you start growing? |

I was just wondering why everyone started growing their beards. I know everyone has different reasons for it. What made you interested. Thanks

Great Idea to post a topic like this growinyoung.
Well here's my story. I am by no means an early bloomer: In the spring of last year, Good Friday, I think it was, I noticed my younger cousin (about 4 years age difference) sporting whiskers, when we were taking a cruise in his truck. It was a 'stacheless beard, chin strap type style. So I said something like, "Hey, you have facial hair. Maybe I should grow something." I told him how often I shaved. He pretty much assured me that I could grow something. So I took his word for it, and by the time his highschool graduation approached, my chin strap had made its appearance. I shaved it for a job, quit the job not just because I was missing my beard....then about a month or so later, grew it back. Since July 2nd or 3rd, I haven't shaved my beard. And on October 1st, about 1:00 am or so, I added stopped shaving my 'stache. Now I wear a carved beard with light, developing, mustache type of style.

I was actually growing a beard because I always wanted one and felt confident I could get good growth now, then 2 weeks into growth four of my friends noticed
none of us have shaved so they decided to make this "funny bet" to see who would shave first (the consequence to shaving first is rather, unsettling,
to say the least) so that whole bet thing is just reinforcing my drive to not shave. Funny how things work out isnt it

Contrary to some of the posters above me, I have never thought about growing a beard until well after I was able to grow one.
Actually, the real reason I wanted to grow a beard was this website. I read every single archived and old thread and I couldn't get enough of it. The only reason I found this site is because I was sick, and I hadn't shaved for about 4-5 days. Then I started to wonder about growing a beard for the first time in my life. Did a google search, and found this board among other helpful websites. |

I've been interested in having facial hair for as long as I can remember. Even when I was 7 or 8 years old I wanted to have my own razor, but my parents
wouldn't buy me it. I remember I wanted my dad to buy me this newly released Mach 3 razor, and he said that by the time I have to start shaving they would
be making razors with 4 blades.
I also remember that when I was 12 I wanted to grow a goatee like Darcy Tucker (NHL player) has on and off. So naturally when I got my first whiskers in 2003 at 13 years of age I wanted to grow them, and I did until I was convinced that they weren't good enough to sport yet. I shaved regularly from 2003 to 2006 but would sometimes decided to let everything grow, or to grow a goatee but I could never get past 2 weeks of growth. I would shave it because people would say it's still peach fuzz and whatnot. In late 2006 I managed to let everything grow for nearly 4 weeks, leading into 2007. I got complements for the first time and since then I have never shaved regularly. I would grow everything for a few weeks and then shave it and grow it out again. Since April 2 2007 I have not been fully clean shaven, and whatever I do shave is usually grown out for a few weeks. I grew my full beard out for 5 months this year and the only thing that stopped from keeping it were those same worries that I had for the years before; the growth was unsatisfactory in my opinion. So in short, I just naturally want to have facial hair. I just like it. I don't choose to like it, it's just the way it is. |

I just like having facial hair. Another hard to explain kind of thing. I think I look better with it than without as well.

When I was 16 I grew a goatee cause at the time no one else in class was growing anything so I was the receiver of some compliments from the female student
which i liked
Then I noticed that i looked better with my goatee than without so at 18 when i got sufficient growth on my cheeks I grew the whole beard-stubble style which was a hit with the girls. It was also some kind of rebellion cause my father and my grandfather were giving me negative remarks about the beard like: 'why don't you shave?' and 'why do you want a beard?'. And I was like WHY NOT! So I made sure they never saw me without one again lol |

I started growing because of this board. I was too afraid to grow mine out before since it's different from where I came from. Not a lot of Asian people
can grow decent beards so most of the men here would just keep it smooth, which i could say is the norm. I was glad I found this board and know that there are
a lot of beard enthusiasts out there. I was a lurker for a moment and started reading some posts about how to grow beards and the whatnots. I have a decent
coverage and tried my first goatee at the age of 21/22 (I can't really pinpoint when) which lasted for more than 2 weeks(I used to shave almost everyday
before that). Then I started out on different styles and the chinstrap became my favorite. Eventually, I grew a beard which lasted for almost four weeks and
went back to the chinstrap and goatee styles.
I have this board to thank for giving me the encouragement to grow a beard. Kudos to all you bearded brothers!

Like several of the other guys have said, it's just something I've always wanted to do. I grew my first beard when I was 18 or 19. I actually had good
coverage then, but my whiskers hadn't quite gotten past the fluffy "peach fuzz" stage at that point. I kept it for about 9 months or so, then
shaved it off. About 2 years ago, though, I decided I wanted to try something different, so I grew my first goatee. I liked the look of it, but hated the
maintenance it entailed. I actually hated maintaining the goatee more than I did being clean-shaven. After a month or two with the goatee, I went through a
lazy slump where I didn't shave anything for about a week. A few people at work took notice, and asked if I was growing out my full beard. I just
half-seriously said I was considering it, and got a great deal of encouragement, saying they could see me growing out a nice, full one. The rest, as they say,
is history.

With me, it was more of a spur of the moment type of thing. I said to myself "Might as well grow something". Then again, that's the type of
person I am. I pretty much go with the flow, and do or start something without any warning.

Why I grew a beard | ||
|
I started growing a beard/goate a few years ago because for much of my life in the Military and Correctional Service I was not allowed to have one. Now my job
does not dictate how I have to look, so I enjoy wearing a beard. Also, I am an avid outdoors sports person and living where it gets cold six months of the
year, its nice to have a beard while skiing, skating, hiking, biking. Also, I look exactly like my Dad and Grandpa and wanted to be different, they both were
always clean shaven with very short hair. I to have short hair to balding (not by choice) but enjoy looking different with a beard.
Perhaps funny reasons, but those are my reasons for being bearded. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.- Martin Luther King, Jr. |

I just decided on the spur of the moment to start my first beard. No special reason to do it and I hadn't ever really thought about doing it in the past.
This website has been a great source of knowledge and encouragement. I am 11 days into it so far and hope to have many more. Take care everyone.

I have been wearing facial hair since I started loosing my hair when I was 20. My first real attempt came at 27 when my bass player challenged me to a beard growing contest. 10 months latter I looked like ZZ Top and he looked about the same. This was in 93 and the number of long beards were few. So I went back to other styles. Lately I have been thinking fondly of the long beard and thought it was time to grow it back. And my corporate job does not seem to mind so here it comes.. Plus I joined the USA Beard team which I think all of you should join too. |
