Getting pictures into a post in your thread is a three step process and these steps should be considered carefully. Each of the following sections describes one step of that process. Steps 2 and 3 have several choices because of the multiple places your pictures can be stored. Follow the link(s) to the step(s) you need to accomplish...
- Take Pictures made for successful posting on Beard Board. This discusses how to take pictures that display your journey well.
- Store Pictures into albums or repositories. A discussion of possible places to store your pictures and how to get them there.
- Insert Pictures into your post from your storage area. This process depends on the storage location
Sounds pretty simple to just take some pictures with that fancy or cheap camera, the phone or tablet or even the webcam but if you don't get these pictures right, you'll be disappointed when you see them in your post. Here how to show your beard off the best...
Camera settings: resolution no larger than 640 pixels on a side... get this right and you won't be looking for software to resize your pictures later. The flip side of the resolution choice is to use a webcam which you will soon learn shows hardly any detail of your beard but it's great to see who you are.
Lighting: Natural outdoor lighting shows true colors best. Natural indoor lighting [especially filtered sunlight] is also good. Flash will wash out lighter beard coverage, may reflect of the skin beneath your beard, and light colored beards. It also makes it difficult to see new hairs [like vellus and transitional] in any detail.
Distance: The closer the better. Try to fill the screen with your face... even add closeups of certain areas if you want more advice about some problem area.
Distractions: Watch the background. Is there something on the wall or on a bookshelf that appears to be growing out of your head or beard? Do you have a long dark beard that blends in nicely to your dark shirt or perhaps a gray beard against a cream shirt? Some guys think it's cool to hold the phone in front and take a mirror shot which works fine as long as the phone is not blocking the beard. Consider taking the picture with the front camera and it's easy to see the result before clicking.
How many pictures to take: Take lots of pictures but post just the best ones and select different angles. Remember, you want others to take a quick look and comment, not get bored looking at scads of pictures.
How often to take pictures: Start your pictures when you have something to show, which is typically a week or two in. Then for the first couple months, take them every week or whenever you can show changes. The next couple of months perhaps go to bimonthly and after 4-5 months perhaps just monthly updates. Remember that as your beard gets longer, it will take longer to notice changes.
Avatar pictures: The special consideration here is that Beard Board will force height and width dimensions pretty much square by cutting excess width or height, so try to crop your avatar pictures to a similar aspect ratio. Closer shots seem to show better than distance shots in the avatar.
Store Pictures into Albums or Repositories
You must store your pictures where Beard Board can find them. It cannot find them on your PC or mobile device. It can find them in one of your account albums or in some repository in the cloud. First decide where you want to store your pictures, then follow the link or instruction to get your pictures there.
Storage areas come with capability to organize your photos into albums or folders. A good technique is to group your photos when you make a new post and name the album to reflect that update.. for example, First Journey 2 weeks.
Here are your 3 choices to store pictures. Choose the one that suits you...
Beard Board Albums: Your account comes equipped with a capability to define albums and load pictures into those albums. You don't have to worry that these albums will disappear. Pictures can easily be inserted into your posts from these albums. Here is the pictorial step-by-step to do that store process.
Repositories: You set up an account in a repository such as imgur and load your pictures into their storage with the process they give you. There is no pictorial of this because each repository has it own processes to load and store pictures. You are responsible for maintaining this account and if it expires or changes for some reason, your posted pictures will show as a white square with the word 'image' inside. Here is the explanation of the linked Photobucket account and all other repository accounts.
Mobile Device: Mobile devices have the capability to take pictures, create albums and store pictures. The only way to post those pictures to a thread is to use the Yuku Mobile Application which will move them to a Beard Board album automatically and then onto the post, all in one step. The only downside is that each picture is placed in a separate album which can get unmanageable after posting many pictures; however, these pictures can be grouped and moved around into better named albums at a later time. Since the mobile device can take and edit pictures, store pictures in albums and post pictures to your thread, this becomes a very easy and quick way to complete the entire process. Here is the step-by-step for that process.
Insert Pictures into a Post
Now that you have your pictures stored either in your Beard Board account albums, in a repository or on your mobile app, you may add these pictures to a post.
Use one of these 4 choices to post pictures to a post in your thread. This choice is dictated by the storage location that holds your pictures and that you decided in this thread.
Beard Board Album: You have loaded your pictures into one or more account albums. Use this step-by-step to get them into your post.
Photobucket: You have linked your Beard Board account to your Photobucket account, so you may follow a slightly modified posting technique to the one above. Use this step-by-step to set up the Photobucket link and learn how to insert the pictures from Photobucket.
Repositories: For unlinked Photobucket accounts and all other repositories, follow this step-by-step after loading pictures to the repository
Mobile Device: When using the mobile device, your albums are currently on the mobile device. Follow this step-by-step to store them in a Beard Board Album and insert them into your post.
