PBL, I don't mean to be so much of a presence on your thread but when I see a guy like you wanting to take charge of how your beard looks, I really want to tell you about my experiences... I hope they can help you.
My beard is far heavier than yours and I can get it to stay up pretty good after some weeks of training. Here's my trick for eating/drinking... I fold over a paper towel to 2" square size and carry this with me all the time. During and after the meal, I drag this through the stache both directions with pressure.. this keeps the stache clean during eating. At the end of the meal I use the thumb/index finger technique I described above to get the hairs along the top of the upper lip and it will stay up pretty good. I refuse to use straws or special mugs for drinking because the cleanup technique works well for me. I also do not use a comb because it will spread the hairs and encourage the hairs to drop over the lip. You want to keep the mass of hairs together as much as possible. The styling glue only needs to be applied in the morning and as it will loosen when wet, you just reshape with your hand and when dry it will have some holding power. Give this a try and see if it helps you too.
