If so, what are they? -Do you notice a difference between the reactions of men and women? If so, what differences are most notable? -Do you notice a difference between the reactions of people over and under the age of 30? If so, what differences are most notable? I realize this sounds somewhat formal, and I further realize that many of these issues are discussed elsewhere on this board. I would like to isolate these specific questions, though, for the sake of clarity, organization, and proper citation. Any informative contributions you can give over the course of the next two weeks will be greatly appreciated. When I first selected it I expected to have access to an almost exclusively American audience, but if I get enough input from other areas I can broaden the topic to include other parts of the world.

Generally positive or no reaction to my beard. Especially when kept trimmed short. 2. No specific label other than the occasional Mountain Man (when longer). 3. Women tend to be fine with my beard until it gets more than about 2 inches. Then I get comments. I rarely get any comments from men. 4. I have not noticed any particular correlation between age and comments. Older women tend to be a little more forthcoming with comments in general, however. Patience shall be rewarded! More than 50% negative, although (other than my father, who hates my beard) almost all of the negative has been in the form of mild teasing, which I believe is in good fun. -Are there specific labels you often find attached to you because of your facial hair? If so, what are they? Mostly hippie. -Do you notice a difference between the reactions of men and women? If so, what differences are most notable? No negative reactions from women with the exception of my sister. I feel like I get noticed by women more now that I have a long beard, but that is extremely subjective, may not be true, or may be caused by other factors. -Do you notice a difference between the reactions of people over and under the age of 30? If so, what differences are most notable? Not really. The older people get the less negativity, but that doesn't start until about 50-60 years old. Good luck with your project!

The typical reaction to my beard in terms of comments are typically positive. Overall, I get a lot of negative reactions from people in terms of the looks they give me. I am sure this has to do a lot with geography for there are not a lot of men with larger beards where I live, and most people around here are pretty narrow minded as well. I suppose most who dislike my bearded look don't have anything nice to say so they don't say anything at all. There are no specific labels attached to me that I am aware of. I do of course get the trite comments thrown at bearded men. Most of the time it's the "Going for the ZZ Top look?" I do in fact notice quite a difference between how men and women react towards me. Men either have no reaction to me, or give me props for growing so long (as if they want to do the same but are afraid to for whatever reason.) I don't get many comments from women, but I do get quite a few dirty looks. The larger my beard gets, the more I do notice this. I am generalizing, but it is my opinion that many women really are hung up on looks and think men should be shaven and polished. Many of the women I come across actually seem disgusted. I also must admit, again, that geography places a role. Women where I live are very shallow indeed. You will find that peoples' attitudes towards beards will vary greatly depending on the location. I do not notice much of a difference between reactions from people under 30 compared to over. I suppose the younger crowd in this area is a bit more accepting of the look as they have less hangups than a lot of the older folks do. Usually the compliments I get from older folks are from men with beards (of course.) There are two kinds of people in this world that go around beardless, boys and women, and I am neither one. Jayson

With increased length, close family have asked when I'm going to go shorter. 2) labels: santa claus, zz top, alpöhy (heidi's grandfather) 3) women on the whole mention it and how they like it. more female 'interest' since the beard arrived. men: on the whole don't mention it or if they do they say it's longer than the last time I saw them and how they don't think they could grow a beard. 4) No differences with age. Both teenagers and old folk have commented or ignored it in equal measure. PS I'm in Europe, 40 years old.

I don't have much reactions of people who don't know me. If there are, the are positive. Family and friends noticed and said I look different, but that's all. No negative reactions. -Are there specific labels you often find attached to you because of your facial hair? If so, what are they? As long as the beard was short, they called me to a local humorist. With the longer beard they call me Santa Claus or Leopold II (bearded Belgian king). -Do you notice a difference between the reactions of men and women? If so, what differences are most notable? No, I don't notice a difference -Do you notice a difference between the reactions of people over and under the age of 30? If so, what differences are most notable? I don't think so. Young men don't give comments on older men when they can hear it. I am 60 and live in Belgium.
