Hey everyone. I recently turned 17 (on the 17th) and I've been meaning to post pics of my... attempts at growing facial hair for a while now, but I've been afraid to do so for some reason. Well, I'm finally getting around to it! These were just taken literally 20 minutes ago or so. The last time I shaved was sometime during the day on Christmas Eve, so I guess that makes these pictures about 5 days of growth or so?

I know it's not that amazing (nor is it the worst) for a 17 year old. My cheeks are pretty weak but my chin is decent, I think. I've kept short-ish sideburns for a few months now, but it's probably hard to tell by the pics. Sorry about the quality if it's crappy.
If I ever don't shave for a while (which isn't often, since I usually give in after usually a week or less), my dad and brother (who is bearded) always tell me to grow it out. I always get self-conscious and stuff, though, so... yeah, that ends any progress.

I guess I'm just wondering if I should bother to continue to grow it out, to shave it, to style it somehow... opinions please, I guess!

First off , welcome to the board , it looks like you have some decent growth. I think you'll find the majority of us here will tell you to grow it out for at least 2 months to see what you really have to work with. If I had to guess I would say it's a lot more beard than you think it is. Go for it !

For guys like you and me it is a lot more difficult to fight those inner voices of doubt and insecurity that others realize. I probably had similar growth at 17 or 18, but like you, I would get self conscious and worried what others are thinking. Once I got beyond that, growing the beard was a piece of cake.

What I suggest is you set a goal. Perhaps you pick a style you're least anxious about, like a chinstrap or goatee, and then make a pact with yourself to let it grow for 2 months no matter what. If anybody comments, you simply tell them your plan. With supportive family members, it makes things a lot easier, so at least you don't have to deal with that nonsense.

Once you get to your goal, I strongly suspect most of the anxiety you felt will have evaporated.

Hey, welcome to the board!

Great that your father and brother are supportive and tell you to grow it out!
There are not many teens who can say they have that support.

Now, it's up to you.
I say you have what it takes to be fully bearded.
Just stop shaving for 2 months, post your progress here.

After that, then you can style it whatever way you want. So congratulations again!

You do have a bit of growth going on there. Take the suggestion given by your bearded brother and father. You have awesome support there. If they are encouraging you, take the plunge and G-R-O-W!!! Be patient, you're only 17, so it may take time, maybe 2 months or more before it all fills in. If by chance it does not, make the most of what you do have. Keep what is the most dense. Don't forget to keep us posted here. There's plenty of support here, if you need it. Happy growing!

Thanks everyone who's commented or sent me a message; I appreciate the support! It means a lot, really.I think I'm going to upload a few new pictures tomorrow (since it'll be 1 week).

I'm really conflicted as to whether or not to shave it on Saturday, though... I have church the next morning (and I feel like I'll look too hobo-ish this way). Plus, Monday is school, and I don't want it to look like I've just let myself go all week and have been super lazy. SO, I'm thinking of shaving my neck and cheeks (my weakest areas, I think) and just leave whatever goatee/mustache growth I have. and short sideburns. I think I'm gonna wait a little while before actually going for a legit full beard. I'd rather show off what I CAN grow decently than try to show off something I don't have yet. Maybe I'll try again over winter break in February or over spring break or something...

Buuut I will most likely post pictures tomorrow, so look out for those!

I think for only a week of growth, all around there is decent length, but the density could be a lot better (and hopefully will in time). As I wrote in my previous post, I think I'm just gonna shave everything except for the goatee/"mustache" and sideburns. I'll wait for a legit beard once my cheeks and neck fill in a bit more. This was certainly interesting, though, growing it all out for a week! I don't think I've ever made it this long lol.

Honestly, I think it would be best if you only left the goatee and sideburns. I don't agree with Shorty (and anyone else in case they've mentioned it) that you can grow a full beard ... even if it's only been 1 week, I don't think that's an option yet. But do keep your goatee and sideburns!

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. I just think it's best to keep only my strengths instead of "showing off" something that I can't pull off. Goatee and sideburns it is!
