What is the failure? You have only shown one side, so we can't compare the difference.
The style you have now is really a wide chin curtain but on the side you showed, the hairs are developing in toward the skin. With the smooth cheek line, you will have a very deliberate look... with the natural line, your development will be evident and it will be a moving hair line as that development proceeds. The smooth cheek line will give you a little younger style than the natural line, but you still look 20, even with that carved line. Hopefully, this gives you some things to think about so you can make the decision whether to carve the cheek line or let the sides grow more.
Just to give you more to think about... the hair is falling off your jawline quite nicely now and you are getting a taller goatee. So, you may think about letting that grow longer to increase the look in the front... it is a way to show a little longer beard without all the bulk in the undercarriage.
Very soon you will be thinking about whether to keep your beard or not. I know your beard is a keeper but you have to bring your mind up to the point of accepting your beardedness. That could happen in a couple weeks or longer... keep telling yourself how much you like your beard and in no time, many things will change for you.
