I don't know that you'll have an issue. Yes, you can trim it, or shape it while it grows, but length is what you need, so I would avoid trimming for the first 3 months. The slower growing hairs will not be too noticeable while they grow out - they'll blend in fine, but deal with that later - I suspect you won't have an issue. Growing should not be a problem growing as many places now recognize you are growing and don't have an issue with it. Since you are not used to having one - you're probably going to be your own worst critic, so ... another reason to be on this board so other bearded guys can give you feedback. Not everyone likes beards, some are envious, jealous, etc., so ... you'll get some negative comments as you grow. Get some light oil to keep it softer - jojoba, argan, or even beard oil. Also, it may stick out a bit at times while growing, but will lay down more as it gets longer.
