At what point is a beard a beard, and when is a mustache a mustache? At what point does stubble stop being stubble and start being facial hair? Is it when people recognize that you now have facial hair, or is it when you feel like it's now real facial hair?

Of course everyone may have a different opinion but IMO a beard is there as soon as you see something that does not indicate a smooth shaven face so I include 5 o'clock shadow as a beard as do I include stubble. I do not think you need recognition from anyone to include yourself (or anyone for that matter) that you have a beard. It's really your own opinion that trumps everyone else's. And whatever gave you the impression that stubble is not facial hair?! Facial hair is facial hair with differing amounts depending on the wearer's wants.

I definitely agree that one doesn't need anyone elses recognition, and your own opinion should be all that matters. I'm just generally interested to see how others feel about the topic. I hope I didn't offend anyone by insinuating that stubble isn't facial hair, I've always just thought of it more as a promisary note that, with patience, a beard may one day arrive lol.
