I was asked to review the Craft Beard Oil (10ml) by That Beard Company - that beard.co

I received a free sample of 10 ml that would normally ship for £14.95 (30 ml go for £24.95) - no shipping cost for both - at least to Switzerland - I couldn’t test out other destinations, since the default settings always jumped back to Switzerland and I didn’t feel like tweaking my browser settings. - Update, I tried an incognito session and there were still no shipping costs charged for the US.

The price is a bit steep for 10 ml - you’ll be better off with 30 ml, BUT it’s handcrafted. Handcrafted? You say, aren’t all beard oils handcrafted. Yes, probably, but this one is made to order.

On the website you can craft it virtually yourself. You choose between eleven different carrier oils, until you’ve reached the chosen amount - in my case 10 ml. All oils and their traits are nicely explained. The stuff your future beard oil is made of is claimed to be organic btw.

I didn’t make too much of a science out of it and used the sliders intuitively and came up with:

Hemp Seed Oil: 4
Apricot Oil: 2
Sweet Almond Oil: 1
Grape-seed: 1
Avocado Oil: 1 - yes please
Hazelnut Oil: 1

After that process, I could choose up to five drops of 20 different essential oils. Again, all is nicely explained, even the difference between top, middle and base notes of the scent and what scents got well along with each other. My chosen oils were.

Bergamot: 2
Peppermint: 1
Sage: 1
Ginger: 1

You can add Vitamin E after that if you like, using a checkbox.

I found the virtual crafting entertaining, but felt a bit overwhelmed by the options at the same time, however, I kept it simple. I didn’t want an oil puddle with everything and nothing in it.

Now I imagined the poor guy coming home from his daytime work, sitting down at his kitchen table and mixing my unique oil. For an individual proc however, the oil arrived quite quickly within one week - as I recall - im Switzerland.

I’m a bit lost now, because how should I review this product, because I can only review my individual sample out of the plethora of possibilities. Another one may not be to my liking or not suitable for my skin condition.
Probably you see the dilemma here, but still, I can only review my unique sample.

Anyway here goes my unbiased review:

Why do I use beard oil? You have to start with that question, to begin properly, because this is a very individual setting.
I like how it makes my beard soft, I like a subtle scent and most importantly, I have dry skin and I like to take proper care for that part that is covered with my beard.

The paramount these ist after swimming, when my skin is prone to end up dry and flakey. That test passed the crafted beard oil with bravura. No, no flakes, but soft moisturised skin and very soft beard.

The scent was very pleasant, mint goes very nicely with bergamot, sage and ginger, however the initial whiff of mixed oils reminded me a bit of glue, but disappeared fast - I’m a bit peculiar here - another oil, I’ll review in the future and a good one at that, reminded me of a dusty hot attic while applying. So the smell was nice, not overwhelming, but plain and simple nice, exactly what I wanted.

So far I’ve only had one oil out of the six, I’ve tried so far, that was as good as that one, in fact, the crafted oil was probably even a bit better. My skin was very nice, soft and moisturised, the beard lush, soft and not fluffy.

Yes, I guess, I really, really liked it. Downside, it’s not cheap and I used it up quickly and the bottle does not indicate easily how much is left in it.

But on the positive side of things, I ordered the carrier oils I’ve tried so far and liked very much - in my case hemp, avocado and apricot - plus the scents I’d like to have - bergamot, orange, cinnamon and spearmint.
I still have some nice jojoba oil. Add some hair vitamins to that and I’m good to go and try out the simple scents I like with self crafted oils: orange-cinnamon, and bergamot-spearmint.

And that might just be the niche of that product. Try a few oils you ever liked to try and then craft your own - even if one thing I never, ever wanted to do is making my own oils.

Yeah, well. Bing Bong-Factor: 4.5 of 5
