Hey!
So I wanted to try a new, more nuanced scent for my beard oil. I had been doing pretty simple mixes with two or three essential oils (cedar, sage, lemon grass) but I wanted to try for something more complex. I figured people have been using essential oils for perfumes/colognes for a while before a Neanderthal with a beard thought to add it to his beard oil so I searched online for perfume recipes using essential oils and found THIS SITE. I still wanted something woodsy and I found THIS BLOG (on the previously linked site) with the Woodland Perfume recipe.
So I went to the store but they didn't have Spruce or Fir Needle image. So I improvised a bit. I grabbed the Vetiver and Bergamot then I thought Pine Needle may give me a similar effect as the Spruce and Fir I was missing. I had the Cedar at home and I thought I would toss is some sage for good measure.
When I got home I opened the 2oz dropper bottle I picked up and started with the Pine Needle, attempting to add about 8 drops (doubling the recipe's call for 4 drops of Spruce). The Pine Needle oil came out very fast (which is about the opposite from every other essential oil which I have to shake for 2 minutes just to get one drop to fly out on to the floor instead of into my bottle image) so I ended up with about 10 drops. Then I did 4 drops of Cedar and Sage, then 2 drops of Bergamot and Vetiver.
Once that was all in the dropper bottle I closed it up and rolled it around a bit to mix it up. My wife and I took a whiff and both thought it was a bit too piney so I went back and added 2 more drops of Cedar and Bergamot, and one more drop of Vetiver.
I have no clue if it smells anything like the original recipe, but we found it pretty nice. I topped the bottle off with 50/50 Jojoba and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, both of which add a slight nutty odor. I am curious if anyone else has tried more complex blends and how they liked the results.

In the end, this was the recipe (or as close as I can figure image):

Pine Needle - 10 drops
Cedar - 6 drops
Sage - 4 drops
Bergamot - 4 drops
Vetiver - 3 drops

50/50 - Jojoba/Extra Virgin Olive Oil - to fill

I am happy with the results and the mixing is always fun. If I had to name it I would call it Sweet Cedar & Pine. The pine is the inital sensation but bergamot and cedar interact really nicely in the background. I think the vetiver and sage are more muted smells that help blend and add body. If you want more or less stink just make sure to keep the recipies propotioned. If anyone tries it let me know how you like it or if you modify it I'd love to hear about your mix. I also found THIS SITE and a recipe for "Fresh Cut Grass" smell, which cracked me up because of Luke's first foray into essential oil mixing and I wanted to reassure him that he was actually on to something with that basil

Cheers
