Hey man, just thought I'd share my combing experience since we have similarly textured beards. I have found that as my beard is getting longer, there are two types of brushes that are necessary for me. Firstly, a boars bristle brush is a great tool for both distributing oil evenly, and also for simple shaping of the beard. It isn't very useful for detangling though. For that, I like to use a simple metal or plastic style brush with the little plastic ends on each bristle. These don't work too well for guys with straight beards because they build up static electricity, but that doesn't really effect us curly bearded guys much. I also avoid getting my beard wet as much as possible. Infact, I only wash it once every couple of weeks or so. I'm not sure why Dan recommends oiling when your beard is damp. I have not found that to make any difference.
