Thanks for the feedback wahoo! I am going to get my hair cut tommorow should I avoid them trying to carve a neck line for me?
Lots of barbers feel a need to give you your money's worth, and run completely amok when they get near a beard.  The facial-hair craze is still kind of new, and I think many barbers are inexperienced with facial hair.  I got completely butchered (made the mistake of going to a different barber when I was out of town), which is among the reasons that I have been in "no trim" mode for sixteen months.

*IF* you want to let a barber near your beard, be very explicit about what you want and where you're headed (to the extent that you know).  For example, I told my barber a few months ago that I was shooting for eight inches (probably to be revised upward soon), and asked whether I should have him trim the wild hairs along the way.  He advised me to let it go.  That might or might not have been the best advice, but at least he understands that my current goal is to grow the biggest most bad-ass beard that my crappy follicles can muster, and he wants to work with me rather than sabotage my efforts.
