I got a recommendation for the JOICO Moisture Recovery Shampoo and Treatment Balm from a very knowledgeable barber and thought I would give this a try. They are both rather pricey, but you get quite a large container for your money, so I think pricewise they should be en par with the bluebeard products. I know that beard care is a very individual thing, so these are just my impressions:

Both containers are quite practical and look good on the bathroom shelf. The shampoo lathers a bit less than a standard hair shampoo and feels more like a soap than a shampoo, it is easy to apply and rinse.
The treatment is a more solid paste and needs to be left in the hair for 3-5 minutes and than properly rinsed out, which takes a bit.
The smell of both products is mild and pleasant and fades quickly after the hair has dried. Now, my beard feels a lot better than with any other product that I have tried (organic soap, pine tar soap, baby shampoo, organic shampoo, bluebeards). The hair feels less woolly and frizzy, softer yet stronger and with more volume and very easy to comb through. Again this is my personal experience, but I am very pleasantly surprised that this should work so much better than "beard only" products.
The only downside I can see is the slightly steeper price and somewhat tedious 8 minutes under the shower for applying, waiting and rinsing.
