I use my beard as an ice breaker and talking point. Something like, I know a sales rep with a beard don't see that everyday. This small talking point allows me to build almost instantaneous rapport. I can also turn this conversation into dedication and patience. As any sales rep knows rapport and connection go along way. I think my beard also projects an air of confidence that I didn't have before.

This confirms my philosophy as well and holds true not only in sales... it also works with bosses, wives, girlfriends, relatives, parents [for teens], etc... and that is that if you can express what the beard does for you or how it makes you feel or the benefits you derive from it, then those people you are trying to have accept your beard are far more likely to come to your side than if you tell them it's your choice and you don't care if they like it or not. It's more how you can project your thoughts on the beard and not so much about the perceived prejudices of the other party.
