I'm not sure what you mean by floating a beard trimmer. I can't hold it against the skin and just move it back and forth? If I have a long clipper guard or what it's called I think it would be possible to just slide along. Scissors and comb technique seems solid although a bit difficult I can imagine.
Not many trimmers come with guards of great length because the hairs must be held perpendicular to make the cut. Just determine the beard length you want, then search for a trimmer that will cut to that length. The floating technique is just to use a short length attachment and freehand the trimmer over the beard... I imagine this is a little tricky. The comb technique is the one a barber would use and probably the safest... drag the hair away from the skin with a comb and use beard trimmer to cut no more than 1/4" or so off the end.
