Well I have recently acquired a girl friend.  While this is great and all it means one very bad thing.  The facial hair must go..
The sad truth is that most women and girls don't like facial hair on their men initially because they have preconceived notions about it. However, it's also true that most women will get used to some level of beard, given enough time, and will change their opinion of it. So, you can take one of three approaches... demand the beard, convice her to accept some or all of your beard or give in to her demands and shave. The third approach you will propably regret later on because it will be very difficult to change the decision from the one you already agreed to [shave]. The first approach is the easiest for you because you haven't developed any relationship with her yet, but you may lose the girl, assuming that's acceptable to you. In other words, you just wait for a beard-friendly girl to come along. The second approach is the most difficult but the most win-win because you both agree to some level of beard which can be more easily changed in the future. It buys time for her to get used to your facial hair. I favor approach 2, then 1 then 3 in that order.
