My normal length is about (2 to 3 months) and I generally maintain a neckline - I do keep my goatee/chin area a bit longer than the sides. I have also grown to a maximum length of about 4 months. However, if you are going for 6-8 months there is no need to worry about a neckline. You can let every follicle grow if you wish. There are two basic approaches: 1) maintain a carved neckline and as your beard lengthens drop the line until you go natural or 2) Let everything grow at once. Both methods will get you to the same place, but dropping the neckline gradually keeps it neater as you go (if that is a concern).
