I've held many different jobs while long bearded and longish haired, partly because i enjoy the office TEMPing business
so i've worked in professional offices, shirt and tie, and was never told to trim
i also worked in retail as the main cashier at a retail store where the store managers at some stores didn't allow long beards period! but my store manager was OK with it

i currently work for a networking company in a technical capacity and have never been told to trim by my bosses though one of my co-workers (a man) hated my long beard and long hair and kept bugging me about trimming it
also my director never said anything until 2 days ago when he was talking about a camera crew coming in and filming for a marketing video - 4 of us were standing and joking about the whole filming thing and the same co-worker brought up my beard again at which point while smiling my director commented that i should clean up my beard but i just smiled and pretended not to hear

here's my thing, i don't want to trim my beard again (i trimmed it significantly a few months ago for myself) for any reason so if i'm asked to, i won't do it and will be prepared for the consequences
