I too always wanted a short, neat beard, and I've tried growing out before and always gave up after a month or so thinking I would never have enough density. Through this journey, I learned that with my straight hair, and the fact that it is not dense or thick, neither is the hair on my head, that a really short beard is not in the cards for me, it will just always look thin and will not cooperate. Some guys are blessed with thick dense stubble, I am not. So I let it keep growing longer, and eventually after months and months it started cooperating through brushing with a boars hair brush and using oil and balm. The length has covered up my problem areas, and they have had a chance to fill in. I've also discovered that I now love a longer or medium length beard. I love the 13 week advice on this board, you may as well grow it out fully for a few months to see what it does, and then decide what to do with it, whether it is to trim it down short again, or leave it long and just tidy it up. But you will never know your beard's potential unless you just patiently let it grow through all the doubts and awkward phases.
