I regularly receive catalogues from a well known retailer of men's and women's clothing who operates by post, telephone and over the internet. It has
been interesting to see how the facial hair of the male models has evolved over the last couple of years from clean-shaven to stubble to scruff and finally
beard. In the latest catalogue, of the five male models used only one is now clean shaven. The rest exhibit various amounts of stubble and scruff and one now
has a beard. Attitudes to facial hair do seem to be changing since a catalogue of this nature which has a huge distribution would not have been prepared
without a certain amount of image research. Examples:
Stubble.
Scruff.
Beard.

I have noticed the same thing here in the states. I see beards in almost every form of advertisement. They are taking the same course as well, from stubble
to full beard.

Actually I've noticed the same thing here in Canada. In fact just the other day I saw a poster of Jonathan Rhys Meyers (probably most recently known as
Henry on The Tudors) with his Goatee and 'stache all over a clothing store. I can't say I really like the style myself, but it's always nice to see
a beard in one form or another in the popular media.

Calvin Klein's latest full page magazine ad has a man with a full beard worn beyond a typical corporate length. This one is the inside cover of Rolling
Stone, January 5, 2009. I had never bought this magazine before in my life but picked it up to share the cover showing Bruce Springsteen's Imperial in the
bearded celebrities thread. I know it's Rolling Stone, which caters to a more eclectic, hip and laid back readership. But still... Calvin Klein's
marketing staff placing a longer beard there definitely says something about trends.

This is great. But is it really on the increase? As far as I can remember, I've always seen stubble/beards in clothing photography / advertisements. It
just really depends on what clothing brands etc you're looking at. The last two photos wulff posted shows the model in the outdoors. I don't know what
the brand it, but a smooth shaven face wouldn't make sense considering the audience they are most likely targeting are adult males with appreciation of the
outdoors / casual clothing. "Wear this, and you'll be a man too".
Have a look at Gucci, Louis Vuitton etc etc ads, and you'll see male faces smoother than baby butts.
The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.

I was getting my hair cut today and I noticed in the hairstyle books that almost everybody had some form of facial hair.
The funny thing is that many of them had somewhat weak goatees, which actually kind of inspired me

Get ready! We may be entering a facial hair age that somewhat reflects the two '60s decades (late 1960's and all of the 1860's) I think Wulffpaul
and Light Eagle prove that facial hair is getting more and more noticed and therefore more and more acceptable to society. This is exciting!
Happy "Bearding" all!

MASTER wrote:I take Master's point, but in the catalogues that I have been receiving, only the last two issues have shown pics of a fully bearded man and he has appeared in 64% of the pics in the latest issue which is quite a high bias towards beardedness, even though there has been plenty of stubble in past issues. Regarding the "high fashion" houses, I agree that many of them still use smooth faced models ranging from the metrosexual to the downright epicene, but I was interested to see an advert in today's London "Times" for Brioni menswear showing a fully bearded male model wearing what we Brits would call a "Dinner Jacket", but you Americans a "Tuxedo", complete with black tie. Hardly outdoor/casual clothing.
So maybe the tide is turning after all. wulff

steve vai wrote:Not sure to whom you are referring, Steve, but there is no reason why a 3 month old topic should not be bumped up if a member has something to say. However, Board rules (13) do state that topics 9 months old or older should not be bumped up, and I am sorry to say that this rule is not always respected. wulff |

I'm not sure what the yuku software is able of doing, but can't threads older than 9 months get moved to the archive?

I think as long as it is still relevant, there is no need to not respond to it.
