I am Irish and Scottish for heritage and all the guys in my immediate family can grow thick beard pretty quickly. I'm by far the slowest developer of the
group (meaning the one without a soul patch and connectors at 20).

Yeah... I'm a Euro-mutt, primarily Irish and German. Just look at my avatar and that'll tell you what you need to know. lol. I got all of the hairy
genes from both ethnic groups.

My ancestors came from the Germanic and Western Slavic regions of Europe. Like mikeCaprice, I'm part Polish. I'm 1/4 Polish, 1/8 Danish, and 1/8
Scotch-Irish. The rest of my ancestors came from Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany.
I can think of family members (living or dead) with facial hair on both sides of my family diverse in natural beard patterns, facial hair styles and colors. This probably reflects my heritage, and I agree that roots play a part. Happy "Bearding" all

Most Asian and African men have less facial and body hair than white people. It is a genetic thing, although there are exceptions to the rule. But look at
Arab and Indian (from Asia) men, who tend to have surplus body hair. And among Europeans, there are variations, with southern Europeans having a better shot
at dense beard growth.

Based on some thorough research a couple of years ago, my ancestry breaks down like this:
Swedish 25% Scottish/Unknown 15.625% German 12.5% Polish 12.5% Ukranian 12.5% Slovenian 12.5% Prussian 6.25% Hessian 6.25% Irish 3.125% So I'm basically of celtic/teutonic/slavic extraction. People often assume that I must have some southern European ancestry because of my dark hair color, but I don't. I'm rather fair-skinned. I don't know much about beard history in my maternal lineage. My mother has no brothers and her mother's brother (my great uncle) died when he was in his twenties. He was clean shaven in the one picture we have. My male ancestor's are a mixed bag. My mother's father grows a very full Sean Connery-esque beard (though it's a shame he's only done so twice in my lifetime), My father has always had a goatee since I was a little kid. His sides never filled in enough to grow a full beard, or so he claims. His brother is the same way. My father's father was always clean shaven and died when I was a little kid. My brothers take more after my father. They both have sparser coverage than I. They both tend towards goatees or variations on moustaches. One of my brothers likes to kid me that I must have leeched all the beard genes out of the family. I guess I got lucky, in that regard. |

I definitely think that ethnic background has an effect on beard growth. I think MikeCaprice's list is pretty accurate if you're looking for
generalizations about groups but as he pointed out there are always exceptions. My own background is basically British (Mostly English with a little Welsh,
Scot, and Irish). My dad can grow a good beard and did so for a bit in the 90's. My mom has two sisters so I have no uncles to compare with and my maternal
grandfather has never grown out a beard although he has heavy stubble. My great uncle (on my mom's side) grew out a beard before I was born which looked
good (I have seen pictures). I have two brothers neither of whom have grown out full beards although my youngest brother who is 26 is sporting a great circle
beard. I think judging from the stubble my brothers have that either one could do a full beard if he wanted to. I also think my youngest brother's growth
pattern is similar to mine although not quite as dense, but I am 10 years older than he is. I think it is really hard to figure out exactly how beard genes
work because there are just so many variables.
