Got together with a couple friends this past weekend and the topic of my beard and shaving came up. I realize this Board is about beards, but all of us at some point shaved or currently still do some degree of shaving even though we have a beard. We were discussing what type of razor we use as well as our technique. They were both amazed and intrigued with the razor I use and I was equally amazed by their technique. Both of them use some sort of disposable razor -- one goes across the grain on the first pass and then against the grain with the second pass. The other guy -- on the first pass, goes against grain because his wife hates any form of stubble whatsoever. I tried to educate both of them that going against the grain leads to ingrown hairs and irritation to the skin.
I've always heard that going against the grain is not recommended for numerous reasons, especially not on the first pass. Is that the way some of the guys on this Board shave? My technique is with the grain on the first pass and across the grain with the second pass. I'm curious if I'm the one whose been doing it "wrong" all these years.
