After a long time of lurking this forum looking for tips and examples I've decided to take the plunge and grow my beard. These pictures are after a month of growing (give or take a few days). Please excuse the lighting and some of my facial imperfections, it was kinda late when I made these. My beard thus far: I'm letting it grow out for another month to fill out some more and then I'm trimming to keep it short and tidy if I like the length and fullness. Let me know what you think. I think you are right in aiming to grow for 8 weeks before doing some serious trimming because by then you will have plenty to work on. As it is, it looks good now and is definitely a keeper. As margus says, the cheeks could be fuller but they will improve with time. Alternatively, you could carve them out if you wanted. Keep growing. Stay bearded! wulff

Your beard could easily be worn as is, but will grow in even more in time. One thing you may have to consider changing in the future is your username. I would consider establishing a very mild cheek line to clean up stray hairs at the very least. It will make things look tidier and more satisfying. Most likely, you'll end up with a slightly carved beard, following your natural coverage patterns, as you grow it out and keep edging. Sorry I went non-responsive in chat last night. Too many phone calls too late at night!

No, not really, the coverage is just a lot better and the hairs seem to be thicker (there's still a patch in the stache that's blond and has lighter growth). I did get a little enthusiastic a few weeks back and trimmed on a somewhat high setting to curb the fasties and to keep the hairs from growing into my mouth. I never had much trouble growing a goatee (used to have one when I was 17/18), though I never seriously bothered with my stache because I don't seem to grow any connectors (I wanted a full goatee). I'm actually surprised on how well it's growing! I thought it would be a lot lighter, but I guess my previous predictions were wrong. The stache and goatee could be a lot darker since there's still quite a few blond hairs but I'm not disappointed with the color. Anyway, today I trimmed to get the neckline back and cut some of the strays on the cheeks.

I haven't cleaned the neckline or the mustache for a few days, that's on the agenda for tomorrow (I hate it though, I get crazy shaving nasty shaving bumps). Though I really should get a haircut. The sideburns are looking very unkept and I'm not liking the overall transition. The beard filled up some more, you can tell by looking at the goatee and the neck. Unfortunately, still not as much on the cheeks as I'd hoped and the mustache still has a gap that doesn't seem to fill. I'm wondering if I should start carving the cheeks, because it doesn't look like it'll fill a lot more, it will just grow longer and I don't really want to have it grow too long. It looks very scruffy and I'm contemplating to run the trimmer over it to shorten the stubborn hairs that are sticking out and maybe move the neckline up some more. In other news, I also had some good experiences with a temp job I took. Most of the regular co-workers had a beard (the boss was bearded) or a mustache while the temp guys were mostly clean-shaven. I could tell I was getting a bit more respect and authority from the regulars compared the the other temps. The last day on the job one of the replacement temps mistook me for a foreman! That really made my day. Let me know what you think.

I like your idea of carving out the cheeks some, but I hope you only make a slight change, removing the sparse hair on the upper cheek. The rest of your cheek growth looks like it will make some slow gains still. The mustache is quite acceptable as it is, so you need not be concerned about it.

You have no need to be concerned by the small gap in your stache. This is very common. It is likely it will fill in gradually, but really does not detract from the overall appearance of the beard you currently have. A little frustrating perahps, but really not important. As for carving the cheeks, that has to be your decision. I can understand why you feel you want to remove the more sparse growth, but if it were mine, I think i'd give it a while longer before doing so.

They weren't too thrilled about the beard, but I stuck with it and ignored the comments, except one which was true. My dad noted my beard looked very scruffy and because we were going on a pretty important visit, he asked me to do something about it. The scruffy look came from the long hairs sticking out every which way. I hadn't trimmed my beard at all over the last 8 weeks and I figured it was time for some high maintenance other than the usual neckline and stache trim. I wasn't quite sure how to do it and played it safe, putting the trimmer on high ( and run with the grain. This did not really have the desired effect so I turned the settings down some more and ran with the grain again. This got more of the long hairs, but I still wasn't happy with the look. I guess that it then finally struck me that as long as I go with the grain and the hairs are cooperating and laying down, I can set the trimmer to low and come out ok. I put it on 4-3 and crossed my fingers. I cut a lot more hairs, most from the neck, but the overall look stayed the same and I was pretty happy with the result. It now looks neater and less scraggly. Together with the haircut I've almost gotten to my desired look (short trimmed beard). I'm still waiting for the cheeks to fill some more before I start carving/edging the beard out. I'll put some more pictures up soon.

I too find that when trimming with the grain a lower rather than a higher trimmer setting works better, but you have to be careful about how much pressure you put on the trimmer, especially around the goatee where - if you are aiming for a tapered look - you need to leave the hairs longer than at the sides. I find that just skimming the surface there works OK. Keep growing. Stay bearded! wulff

For whatever it's worth, I've never bothered with going with the grain--rather, I set it to the length I like and go against the grain. Makes it pretty much idiot proof. I've never had any problems with it.

That's what occurred to me at first, but I was worried about cutting too much and exemplifying the sparse areas because most of the coverage there stems from longer hairs. I might try your method at a later date.
